The European Union (EU) is a union of independent European states that was founded in order to improve political, economic, and social cooperation. The original union was established by the Treaty of Maastricht in 1993 and was built upon the preexisting European Economic Community. Some of the policies and decisions of the EU are implemented by supranational government bodies which do not require unanimity. However, other policies and decisions are subject to each country's agreed participation.
